What's the difference between a double and a twin room?

A double room has one large bed (usually a king or queen) while twin rooms have two beds. We do our best to get at least two doubles or two queens, although in some instances it may be two singles.

How do you select your hotels?

All of the hotels on our site are hand-picked to ensure you have the best road trip possible. 95% of them are rated "fabulous" or better on Expedia. Tripadvisor ratings are also used, combined with personal experience and detailed research. At a minimum, our hotels have:

  • A front desk which is open and staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days per week;
  • Daily housekeeping included in the room price;
  • Private bathroom for each unit;
  • No requirement for guests to stay longer than 3 nights.

    We only work with car rental partners that we consider “blue chip” and that we expect to look after you if anything unexpected occurs. Examples include:

    Can I take sports equipment or other large baggage?

    Yes, you can. A default car type will be selected for your road trip. But if you want to take large baggage, please check the car type selected and consider upgrading to something larger.

    How can I book a flight

    We don’t provide flight sales. We recommend using a 'scraper' service which will check multiple airlines for flights to your chosen roadtrip start & end cities, such as SkyScanner.

    What do I need to take with me?

    Your Passport is critical, and you will need your Modern Roadtrips Guide (we email this to you when you confirm your booking).
    If you are from an EU country you may also wish to take your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
    Travel Insurance is highly recommended for all of our road trips.
    You must check any car rental conditions in your paperwork. But at a minimum, take your driver’s license (both the photocard and paper sections, if applicable) and two proofs of address, such as utility bills. For UK customers, the DVLA has introduced a system that enables you to share your license number for car hires at this Driving Licence.
    We also recommend you bring some cash in the local currency (or traveler's cheques if you prefer).
    Other items we recommend include sunscreen, travel adaptors for your electronic devices, and a GPS (either a smartphone or a traditional sat nav).
    Lastly, it is wise to check your banking and phone tariff arrangements to ensure that payments whilst traveling are not blocked and that data roaming and other telephony charges are reasonable.

    What do I need to bring to collect the vehicle?

    Pick-up requirements vary by region, so it’s better to bring more information rather than less. Please bring your driver's license (including any associated paperwork), with two proofs of address and your passport. For UK customers, the DVLA has introduced a system that enables you to share your license number for car hires at this URL: https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence.

    How do I know my reservation is confirmed?

    After receiving your booking, we will finalize the details and issue you a Modern Roadtrips itinerary containing all the details of your road trip.

    How will I receive my road trip information?

    When you have completed your transaction, our team will confirm your details and finalize your bookings. We will issue an itinerary document to your chosen e-mail address with details of your hotels and your car, and some ideas of things to do whilst on your road trip.

    What facilities will the hotel have?

    We select each hotel based on a range of factors including comfort, location, facilities, value, service, and charm. As such, each hotel's facilities vary, and if in doubt you should consult your itinerary for further details. Wherever possible we make sure that your hotels have free parking facilities to make your road trip easier.

    Where can I find my previous road trips?

    Navigate to 'Account' from the Modern Roadtrips homepage and you can select 'Booked Trips' to see your upcoming and previous trips.

    Are local taxes included in the hotel room and vehicle rates?

    No - you might find that you have to pay these locally at the hotel. Typically you will find these are a just few Dollars or Euros per night.

    How do I use a promotional code?

    On the payment page, you will find a box marked 'DISCOUNT CODE.' Enter the code you have and, if it is valid, it will automatically apply the discount to your order. Please make sure you do this prior to your payment being made.

    Is my credit card number safe?

    Yes. We use the Worldpay payment system, which is run on secure servers and anonymises all of the important data, including your card details. We don’t even have access to the information, let alone anyone else.

    My payment isn't working. What do I do?

    Please contact us with as much information as you can provide. We will do our best to help.

    Once I have bought the roadtrips what else will I have to pay for?

    The following things are not included: Local taxes - for example a 4* hotel night in Barcelona will cost you EUR 1.25 in local tax, which GRT can't charge you up front.
    Food and drink, Attractions, Fuel, Travel to and from the starting and end cities.

    What are my payment options?

    We use the Worldpay system, which means we accept all major cards other than American Express, and also accept PayPal payments.

    Will all my rooms be paid for when I make the booking?

    Usually yes. If every hotel accepts payment up-front we complete the bookings that way. If there are any exceptions to this (which is very rare!) we will advise you. The price you see is the total for the roadtrip, so if any hotels do require payment at the desk, it will be deducted from the amount GRT charge you directly. You'll never lose out because of this arrangement.

    How will I receive my receipt for payment?

    Where can I see and print a copy of my receipt?

    The receipt is included in your formal confirmation email.

    Can I make a reservation without a credit card?

    You will require either a credit card or a debit card to pay for your Modern Roadtrips.

    Yes. The default booking will always be for a single driver. If you want to include a secondary driver, please tell us when you make the booking using the contact us page. We will investigate if there are any additional charges (which is common) and we will confirm.

    How can I extend my trip?

    Can I upgrade one or several of my hotel rooms?

    When you make your road trip selection, you can choose between Budget, Standard, and Luxury trips, all of which offer a different level of hotel quality. We book the best hotels we can find in Europe based on the chosen level of quality but often upgrading a room is easily done for a small charge. If you would like to make a specific upgrade, please email us to discuss this and we will investigate for you.

    Can I change the name of someone coming with me?

    The only names we need are the name used for check-in at each hotel and the name of the driver of the rental car. If either of these names change, please email us and we will try to change the onward bookings for you. The names of anyone accompanying you on the road trip are not required.
